Do you want to learn the world’s most effective martial art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

At the very first UFC in 1994, an unknown skinny Brazilian named Royce Gracie shocked the world by defeating practitioners from almost every other style.  Gracie used his family’s own blend of jiu jitsu, known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – a grappling-based martial art – that emphasises technique and leverage over strength and brute force.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has now spread across the world and we are bringing classes to Carryduff within reach of Belfast, Ballynahinch, Lisburn, Ballygowan, Downpatrick, and Saintfield.

Train with highly-experienced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts – awarded by world champion Braulio Estima – and begin your journey into the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with our specially-developed beginner’s programme.  Each week you’ll learn a new aspect of BJJ, from self defence to dynamic takedowns, cool sweeps to submissions.  Begin your journey under expert tutelage, training with some of the most talented and friendly blue, purple and brown belts in Belfast!

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Well, BJJ is an art with three components:

    1) Self Defence

The ability to defend yourself is at the core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  A competent practitioner must be able to defend themselves against a bigger, stronger and more aggressive attacker.  Key to this is controlling a fight.  Rather than stand and strike with an opponent, BJJ practitioners look to close the distance (clinch), and take the fight to the floor.  On the ground a jiu jitsu fighter uses position, gravity, timing and leverage to subdue an attacker and end the fight.  There’s a famous phrase: ‘the ground is my ocean, I’m the shark, and most people don’t even know how to swim’.  Most people do not know how to fight on the ground, and we take advantage of that.  This is what allows men, women and children to use BJJ effectively, and  defend themselves.

    2) Sport BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has its own form of competition, and there’s plenty of chances for you to compete in this exciting sport once you gain experience. Competition in the gi (uniform), or no-gi (shorts and t-shirts), is a great venue to test out your skills.  What better way to prove your jiu jitsu is getting better, than competing against other trained practitioners?

    3) MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts

Since the first UFC, every fighter that has entered the octagon has had to know the tools of Brazilain Jiu Jitsu, either to submit their opponents, or ensure that they, in turn, don’t get tapped out.  Think about this: in the world’s premium showcase for effective martial arts, BJJ is a must.
